Abstract

Intrapreneurship, known by various synonyms and associated terms (Corporate Entrepreneurship, Corporate Venturing, Strategic entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial-Intrapreneurial Orientation, Intention, etc.), have evoked significant research interest over the years, for its prevalence and importance in organizations, enterprises and institutions. Longitudinal accounts of the evolution and progress of this field with specific focus on geographical, institutional and sponsorship support aspects are scarce. This article aims to address this gap by focusing on these aspects through a systematic bibliometric analysis of the academic publications over the past 55 years (1970-2025).

We adopt an inclusive view of using all types of publications: articles, books, conference proceedings, reviews, SLRs, bibliometric and meta-analysis. Using a comprehensive set of search strings (synonyms, associated terms, concepts and phrases), bibliometric analysis is done for the whole period (from early 1970s till the end of 2024). After an overview of the evolution of scholarship and publications over the time span, we focus on evolution of scholarship in countries and institutions, ending with an analysis of sponsorship and funding of research.

Using bibliographic meta-data from Scopus in conjunction with Scopus analytics, R-Bibliometrix-Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools, we document the evolution of the field and its various facets through performance analysis, science mapping and bibliometric coupling insights over 55 years, 5 decades and a quinquennium.

Despite broad consensus on usage of terms and synonyms relating to intrapreneurship, clear and comprehensive framework still eludes. Entrepreneurial Orientation and Intention are key enabler constructs deserving further attention from the employee-agent perspectives.   Emergence of China into intrapreneurship research with strong state backing as national priority towards sustained economic progress and innovation focus and the economic and social development is unmissable.  Similar other efforts from other Asian and middle eastern countries is clear. Centers of scholarship and publication production is clearly shifting east from US and Europe to China, India and global south. In developing economies sponsorship support helps boost research which in turn contributes to national development and wealth creation. This bibliometric analysis provides an overall view of the field from a different lens of country-institution-sponsorship angle, coupled with typically ignored view of Ecosystem Macro Indicators like Document Type, Language, Subject Area, Source Type, etc.
