Abstract

This study investigates the adoption of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms in India through the lens of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with trust as a mediating factor. Using data collected from 500 respondents across major Indian metropolitan areas, we employ Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the complex relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, trust, and behavioural intention to adopt P2P lending. Our findings reveal that trust significantly mediates the relationship between TAM constructs and adoption intention (β=0.412, p<0.001), with institutional trust demonstrating stronger mediating effects than interpersonal trust. Perceived usefulness exhibits a stronger direct effect on adoption intention (β=0.482, p<0.001) compared to perceived ease of use (β=0.317, p<0.001). The study also discovers there are considerable demographic differences in establishing trust, with city dwellers and youthful respondents being more prone to have greater initial trust in P2P websites. The model accounts for 68.7% of explained variance in P2P lending adoption intentions and provides robust evidence supporting our extended TAM model. Our results provide a conceptual contribution towards the explanation of technology adoption in emerging financial markets and implications for P2P platform developers and Indian regulators. This study fills the essential knowledge gap regarding technology adoption processes of alternative financial services in emerging economies with changing regulatory landscapes...
